Taking two engagements for Q4 2026

We design the systemsbehind the systems.

Orrery Systems is a nine-person consultancy in Lisbon. We build the agent architectures, evaluations, and retrieval pipelines that let AI features survive contact with production.

Services

Four things we do, deeply.

We are not a full-stack agency. Every engagement lands in one of these four bodies of work, usually two at once.

  • Agent architectures

    01

We design multi-step agent systems that hold state, defer to humans, and fail loudly. Built around your domain, not a demo notebook.

  • Evaluation harnesses

    02

Offline suites, replayable traces, and production canaries that catch regressions before your customers do. We treat evals as first-class product.

  • Retrieval pipelines

    03

Chunking, hybrid search, reranking, and freshness policies tuned to the shape of your corpus. Boring plumbing, measurable recall.

  • Operational plumbing

    04

Tracing, cost accounting, guardrails, prompt versioning, and rollout tooling. The unglamorous layer that makes the glamorous layer safe to ship.

How we work

A short, boring, repeatable process.

We keep the same rhythm across every engagement so your team always knows what happens next.

  1. 01

    Scope in a week

A short, paid engagement to read your code, interview your team, and write a plan you could hand to anyone. No slide decks.

  2. 02

    Prototype against reality

We build against your real traffic and real edge cases, not a curated dataset. First traces land in your observability stack by day ten.

  3. 03

    Harden and measure

Evals, red-team runs, latency budgets, and cost ceilings. We ship when the numbers say ship, and we publish the numbers internally.

  4. 04

    Hand over cleanly

Your engineers own the system on day one. We leave documentation, runbooks, and an on-call rotation that tapers over the following month.

Case studies

Three systems, still running.

Metrics measured six months after handover.

Meridian Health

Clinical operations
Problem
Nurses spent nine minutes per admission reconciling intake forms against three legacy systems.
What we built
A supervised extraction agent with a review UI, an eval harness across 12,000 historical admissions, and a rollback switch per ward.
Outcome
Reconciliation time dropped to 90 seconds with a 0.4% correction rate over six months.

Kestrel Freight

Logistics
Problem
Dispatchers were overriding the routing model on 38% of shipments, mostly for reasons the model could not see.
What we built
A retrieval layer over carrier notes and a critique loop that surfaces likely overrides before the dispatcher sees them.
Outcome
Overrides fell to 11% and on-time delivery improved by 6.2 points in the first quarter.

Foundry Legal

Litigation support
Problem
Associates could not trust the firm's document search across two decades of scanned discovery.
What we built
A hybrid retrieval pipeline with citation-anchored answers, a golden set of 800 partner-graded queries, and a nightly regression report.
Outcome
Answer-with-citation accuracy reached 94%, and partner adoption crossed 70% in eight weeks.

Team

The people you actually work with.

There are nine of us. These four lead engagements. Every project is staffed with a principal and one or two engineers, no juniors, no proxies.

  • Inês Carvalho
    Principal, systems

Fifteen years shipping infrastructure at trading firms and health startups.

  • Tomás Rebelo
    Principal, evaluation

Writes the evals nobody wants to write and then makes them fast.

  • Yara Okonkwo
    Staff engineer, retrieval

Believes most RAG problems are corpus problems in disguise.

  • Henrik Alm
    Staff engineer, operations

Runs the on-call rotation and the coffee machine, in that order.

Frequently asked

Answers, before you have to ask.

How large is a typical engagement?

Between six and sixteen weeks, with two to four Orrery people embedded. We turn down work we cannot staff seriously.

Do you build on our stack or bring your own?

Yours. We are comfortable across the major model providers, vector stores, and orchestration frameworks, and we will not sneak a new one in.

Will you sign a data processing agreement?

Yes. We work under DPAs, BAAs where applicable, and can operate inside your VPC. We do not train on client data, ever.

What happens after handover?

A tapering support month is included. After that, most clients keep us on a light retainer for evals review and quarterly architecture check-ins.

Are you hiring?

Selectively. We add roughly one person a year and prefer engineers who have owned a production system end to end. Write to us anyway.

Tell us what you are trying to ship.

A principal reads every inbound within one working day. If we are the wrong fit, we will say so and often point you somewhere better.
